Website and contributor terms

These terms govern the ukiyo-e.uk educational contribution website. The native Ukiyo-e app is subject to Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement and the app-specific provisions below.

Educational project and moderation

The website maintains an educational catalog and a moderated contribution workflow. Accounts require approval. Submissions are not published automatically. We may correct metadata, reject material, disable access, preserve an audit record, or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

Your ownership and license to the project

You retain any rights you hold in submitted material. By submitting an image, metadata, or related text, you represent that the information is accurate and that you own the necessary rights or have permission to submit and authorize the proposed use. You grant the operator of ukiyo-e.uk a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license, with the right to host and sublicense solely as needed to operate the project, to reproduce, store, review, format, display, distribute, and make approved material available through ukiyo-e.uk, its CloudKit public catalog, the Ukiyo-e app, and project documentation.

The license does not transfer ownership. It continues for approved published material until that material is removed under these terms or a rights process, except that limited archival copies and provenance records may be retained where reasonably necessary for security, legal compliance, dispute records, and database integrity.

Required provenance

Every image submission must include the original source institution or provider, source record URL, rights or license label, terms URL, and attribution. Public-domain status of the underlying artwork does not by itself establish that every photograph, scan, database record, trademark, or institutional asset may be reused. Do not submit material when the stated terms prohibit this project’s use.

Prohibited submissions

Do not submit material that infringes copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, contractual, database, or other rights; contains malware or deceptive metadata; unlawfully depicts a person; or violates applicable law. We maintain a repeat-infringer policy and may disable or terminate accounts associated with repeated valid notices or repeated false rights attestations.

Removal, counter-notice, and correction

Rights notices and counter-notifications are handled through the Rights & Takedown page. We may remove material on notice, when infringement is apparent, when source terms change, or when continued distribution creates legal or safety risk. A contributor may withdraw a pending submission; publication decisions and legally required records may remain in the audit trail.

No institutional endorsement

Source names identify provenance and requested credit. They do not state that a museum, archive, artist estate, photographer, platform, or other source sponsors or endorses ukiyo-e.uk or the Ukiyo-e app.

Service availability and disclaimer

The catalog is provided for education and research and may contain uncertain, incomplete, or source-supplied metadata. We do not promise uninterrupted availability or that every record is error-free. Nothing on the site is legal advice or a determination that a particular use is fair use, public domain, or otherwise lawful.

App terms

The app may cache public catalog records and images for offline use. Approved removals are synchronized to the app, and local cached copies are deleted when the device next completes the relevant catalog synchronization. Purchases are processed by Apple under StoreKit. The website does not receive payment-card information.
