This actor’s print represents the power of Shunsen’s work by the dynamism of the subject’s stance and the color of his robe. Although the actor’s world is a traditional ukiyo-e subject, the use of shade, depiction of the precise anatomy, and the unusual pastel color and choice of surface make this print modern and different from classical Edo period (1615-1868) actor prints.
