Mask (Men)
Catalog note / 解説
Mask carver, from ‘Various Classes of Artisans in Coloured Pictures’. Tachibana Minko (active 1760s-1770s) was originally a textile embroiderer but moved from Osaka to Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to begin woodblock print-making and also used stencils to great effect. He is particularly famous for the illustrated book Saiga Shokunin Burui (Various Classes of Artisans in Coloured Pictures) which depicts the work of craftsmen in Edo: the scene here shows a mask carver explaining the history behind the mask of Okina (although the mask seen here does not appear to have the separately attached chin which is characteristic of the Okina mask). Materials: Woodblock print on paper
