Japanese Destroyer Squadron outside the Harbour of Port Arthur
Catalog note / 解説
The cartouche on the right reads: ‘ A squadron of our destroyers draws near an enemy ship outside the harbour at Port Arthur and engages in fierce fighting, greatly crushing the opposition forces, 13 April 1904’. Japan’s victory over Russia in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 was a tribute to the speed and efficiency of its Meiji-period bid to ‘catch up’ with the industrialised nations. Only fifty years earlier, Russia had been one of the five nations to forces unequal treaties on a less-developed Japan. Materials: Colour print from wood blocks
