Aoigasaka
Catalog note / 解説
The location in this <i>uchiwa-e</i> (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige is Aoigasaka, which took its name from the hollyhocks (<i>aoi</i>) that can be seen blooming at the top of the hill. Aoigasaka was situated in the north-west corner of the Atagoshita district in south-west Edo, where water from the Tameike Pond flowed over a small dam into the Sotobori Outer Moat that encircled Edo Castle and its surroundings. The V&A has another impression of this print (Museum no. E.4825-1919). Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
