Three Women Visiting the Okina Inari Shrine

The characters <i>Daimyojin</i> and <i>Okina</i> that figure on the banner and paper lantern to the left of this <i>uchiwa-e</i> (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige identify the location as the Okina Inari Shrine. This was situated in the heart of Edo's busy Southern Nihonbashi district in grounds that were much more cramped than is suggested in this idealised evening view. Mount Fuji rises in the south-west above a bank of purple clouds, and to the right we catch a glimpse of crowds crossing the bridge at Nihonbashi.
