Irises
Catalog note / 解説
This <i>uchiwa-e</i>, or rigid fan print, design by Hiroshige is one of an untitled series of four in the collection of the V&A. The ribmarks visible on its surface are evidence that it was salvaged from a made-up fan. The cool shades of blue are particularly suitable for an item intended for use during the hot months of summer. The irises, which flower in May, are classic symbols of summer's arrival. Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
