Cranes by the Water's Edge
Catalog note / 解説
This <i>uchiwa-e</i>, or rigid fan print, design by Hiroshige is one of an untitled series of four in the collection of the V&A. The ribmarks visible on its surface are evidence that it was salvaged from a made-up fan. The cool shades of blue are particularly suitable for an item intended for use during the hot months of summer. Cranes, which are believed to live for a thousand years, are a classic symbol of longevity. Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
