Colour woodblock print, oban diptych from an album of 117 sheets. The kabuki actors (from left) Sawamura Tanosuke II as the courtesan Komurasaki, about to play the koto, and Ichikawa Danjuro VII as her lover Shirai Gonpachi, about to play the shakuhachi, in an unstaged (‘mitate’) scene.
