Catalog note / 解説

Colour woodblock print, oban diptych. The kabuki actors (from left) Ichimura Uzaemon XII and Nakamura Utaemon IV as the spirits of two shishi lions dancing in a snowbound landscape with peonies, a dance section called ‘yuki no shakkyo’, illustrating the 12th month (‘rogetsu’), from a hengemono dance featuring the twelve months called ‘Hana kyodai nenju gyoji’; performed at the Ichimura-za in the 3rd month of 1840 (Tenpo 11).
