The Iris Garden at Horikiri
在
Catalog note / 解説
The Iris Garden at Horikiri, from the series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo", by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) Today, if you take the Keisei train line from Ueno, cross the Arakawa river, you come to a station named the Horikiri Shobu'en station, or Horikiri Iris Garden. A short stroll from the station takes you to the iris gardens. It used to be that these stretches of marsh were filled with a luxuriant growth of irises. The tall, vertical stems of the irises cross the ground plane at right angles, effectively squaring off the vertical format of the print. This is a lovely scene of early summer. The print takes an innovative view, as if the viewer were crouched down among the flowers.
