The loftiness of Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, is cleverly conveyed here by extending the top of the mountain not only through the frame of the print (a Western-derived element) but even beyond the upper edge of the paper. Although Hiroshige established his fame with this Tökaidö (East Sea Road) series, which remains the best known depiction of the stations between Edo and Kyoto, Hokusai produced a Tökaidö series long before this one, in as early as 1804.
