Catalog note / 解説
The triptych was made in the year that the first Japanese railway line opened between Shimbashi in Tokyo and the port of Yokohama. This event is commemorated in the background. The foreground is dominated by the standing figures of three Kabuki actors who had starred in a performance together earlier in the same year. The juxtaposition of what we now see as ‘traditional’ Japan with western steam power is intriguing. Designed by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900). Published by Tsujioka-ya Bunsuke. Materials: Woodblock print on paper
