Ushiwaka was one of the names of Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-1189), the half brother of Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147-1199), the shögun who established the Kamakura government in 1192. Benkei was a warrior monk and notorious robber who had vowed to collect 1000 swords in Kyoto. According to legend, Ushiwaka encountered Benkei on Kyoto’s Gojö Bridge, where Benkei tried to steal his swords but was defeated. Thereafter, Benkei became Ushiwaka’s loyal vassal.
