Sangi Takamura
Catalog note / 解説
This print depicts the poem by Sangi Ono no Takamura (802-52). The poem is drawn from the travel section of the poetry anthology Shin kokinshü, and details Takamura’s brief exile to Oki Island as a result of his refusal to join an embassy to China in 837. In the poem Takamura compares small fishing boats to islands. Artist Kuniyoshi’s strong interest in Western art is seen in the dramatic foreshortening of the large boat in his design. This motif appears in several other Kuniyoshi prints and illustrated books. (from “100 Poems, One Poem Each” exhibition, 1/18/2005-)
