A comparison of this print with the one by Töshüsai Sharaku (20654) is interesting because they are of the same actor, Sawamura Söjürö III. Although the facial features vary slightly, each carries a fan with essentially the same design. The comparison also ably demonstrates the difference between Sharaku's intensity and Toyokuni's stylization. (from “Kabuki Actors on Stage” exhibition, 4/14/2003-)
