Nihonbashi

日本橋

Catalog note / 解説

Nihonbashi, from the series "Eight Western Style Views of Edo", by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) Even today, Mt. Fuji can be clearly seen from Tokyo on a cloudless day. That is, of course, if there isn't a tall building blocking your view! In the 19th century, you could stand at Nihonbashi and see Mt. Fuji rising behind Edo Castle. Hokusai has depicted this scene in a style that resembles the fine-line drawing found in western etchings. The thin crescent moon might indicate that the sun has just set.
