The story is told that the Emperor was traveling in the countryside one day. A sudden shower forced him to take shelter in a small, temporary hut. The rough mat on the rood lets the rain through, wetting his sleeves and inspiring the Emperor to compose this poem. Coarse the rush-mat roof Sheltering the harvest-hut Of the autumn rice-field; And my sleeves are growing wet With the moisture dripping through In this poem, the rain is transformed into tears of compassion for the hard existence of farmers.
