The Moon's Invention. Hozo Temple

Catalog note / 解説

Number 95. The Moon's Invention. Hozo Temple. Printed 1891. Engraver: Yoshihisa. Seal: Kai. Hozin is a Buddhist temple in Nara, a former capitol of Japan (710-784). Kakuzenbo Hoin In'ei, head priest during the second half of the sixteenth century, developed new ways of spear fighting. Here is holds a practice fencing spear, with a padded knob at the top rather than a point. The crescent moon suggests the kamayari (sickle-spear) used during the sixteenth century. Full margins. Minor printing residue in left-hand margin and area on the top of the water; a few mulberry bark flecks in the paper on the left; otherwise fine color and condition.
