Nakamura Noshio II (Rankô, 1759-1800) as Yûgiri

Catalog note / 解説

This print depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Noshio II (also known as Rankô) in the role Yûgiri. Yûgiri was a famous courtesan in the licensed prostitution area of Shinmachi in Osaka. Her love affair with Fujiya Izaemon, from a rich Osaka family, became a popular theme in kabuki theatre and is still performed today. Images of kabuki actors are an important genre within Japanese wood-block prints. Both kabuki theatre and woodblock prints flourished in the Edo period (1615-1868), products of the increasingly vibrant urban cultures of Osaka, Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo). Materials: Woodblock print on paper
