The artist Katsukawa Shunshô was best known for his depictions of actors and scenes from Kabuki – a popular Japanese theatre form. Actor prints were popular amongst city-dwellers of the Edo period (1615-1868). The patrons of Edo’s theatres followed the careers of their favourite actors who were the celebrities of their day. Images of actors in their dressing rooms were of as much interest to the public as those of them on stage. In this print Shunshô reveals the actor Onoe Matsusuke I, often cast as a villain because of his burly physique, applying his make up in front of a mirror. Materials: Woodblock print on paper
