View of Mt. Fuji from Nihonbashi

Catalog note / 解説

View of Mt. Fuji from Nihonbashi, by Keisai Eisen (1791-1848) Nihonbashi was the starting, and ending, point for several different major highways during the Edo periods, and it commanded a distant view of Mt. Fuji. Edo Castle (also known as Chiyoda Castle) can also be seen in the upper right of the print. The white walls of storehouses line the streets by the Nihonbashi bridge, and boats loaded with goods ply the river. Around the border of the print, the artist has drawn letters that look like some western language, maybe to make it look like a western picture?
