Although produced from a woodblock, this print by Okumura Masanobu is meant to resemble a stone rubbing. Such visual playfulness is characteristic of the experimental spirit of the urban arts during the Edo period (1615–1868) in Japan. Masanobu was a print designer, painter and publisher of early <i>ukiyo-e</i>, or ‘pictures of the floating world’. His influence on the development of the genre cannot be overestimated. Among other achievements, he has been credited as the innovator of these imitation stone rubbings. In this print, a courtesan offers a dish of sake to another woman.
